Future Star of the Bar 2008

Alex Offer
Park Court Chambers

Unlike many of our other Future Stars, Alex Offer has fashioned a niche in an unfashionable area of the law: defending the rights of the Gypsy and Traveller communities. The Yorkshire barrister has won a series of landmark rulings in the UK and Europe that have extended public law protection for one of the most disadvantaged ethnic groups in the country. Offer, 34, is currently involved in a case on behalf of one group of Travellers that, having succeeded in quashing the local council’s decision to evict his clients, will next month come before the Court of Appeal. Offer, who has a two-year-old son, lives in York. He studied at Robinson College, Cambridge and City University in London, and was called to the Bar in 1998. He credits his mother, a probation officer, with giving him a passion for the law and a determination to fight for the downtrodden. “The feeling that what I do has a real social and political value is important to me,” he says. “The law is often involved, and often becomes involved, when other social systems have failed.”
